Rape, murder on the increase in Ekiti—CP

Rotimi Ojomoyela
Ekiti State Commissioner of Police, Sontoye Wakama has raised the alarm over increasing incidences of rape and murder in the State in recent time.
Wakama who gave the indication in Ado Ekiti on Tuesday  while briefing newsmen on the Command’s efforts in crime prevention in 2013, said 44 rape and 44 murder cases were reported in the Command in the preceding year.
The Commissioner, who was represented by his Police Public Relations Officer, Mr Victor Babayemi, (ASP) said the record of this year was warrisome when compared to that of 2012,  where 31 was incidented for murder and 30 for rape respectively.
Wakama, however, clarified that the public enlightenment programmes on
Gender based Violence cases,   coupled with the dedication and hardwork of his men  made many unreported cases of rape to come to the open.
Wakama  said efforts of his men in stemming the tide of crimes in the State have been yielding positive results, saying  about 432 suspects were arrested and prosecuted for various offences last year.
He said five armed robbers were killed by his men , while property worth N579, 464.00 were recovered from evil doers and handed over to their owners.
While disclosing that 22arms and 56 round of live ammunition were seized from the men of the underworld, Wakama added that five vehicles and twelve motorcycles were recovered during the year.
Wakama said the feat was achieved due to robust  patrol and intelligence gathering mechanism put up by the command.
Meanwhile, Babayemi vowed that those indicted in the  killing of a 31-year old  Ifeanyi  Ogudu  over the  murder of his landlord’s daughter, Yemi Olowu last Sunday  in Ise Ekiti, would be arrested and make to face  the full weight of the law.
He said the killing of Ogudu, aka Jerry,  had adversely affected the capacity of the police  to find out what actually prompted him to kill the 18-year old girl.
The deceased suspect, Ogudu,  was  lynched and set ablaze in a mob action after  shooting  the victim to death  with a Dane Gun in her father’s house located at Oraye Quarters of the town.
He said, “Though, we have not been able to verify what actually transpired between the two, but unconfirmed report revealed that the duo were having amorous relationship which had got strained. So, we suspect that must have  caused  the problem”.
