At first sight, the luggage of praying rug look fanciful and inviting so much so that it beats anybody’s imagination that such revered mat (because of its religious attachment) used by our Muslim brethren could sheath powdery substance of death. It is not too clear how the luggage found its way to the Muritala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja, Lagos but investigation revealed that it may have been dumped by a drug trafficker who eventually developed cold feet for fear of being arrested with it. The 5kg powdery substance which tested positive for high grade heroin masterly hidden in the mats has since been taken into custody by operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).
The agency’s spokesperson, Mithcell Ofoyeju confirmed that the luggage containing the drugs was imported from Pakistan and discovered during inward screening of cargoes on Qatar Airline Flight. Nobody has yet been arrested in connection with the luggage Ofoyeju said, “The examination of the consignment was witness by other security agents and was given 100 percent physical examination in the presence of customs and other security agents.
During the search, we found thirty five sachets of brown powdery substance that tested positive for heroin concealed inside praying rugs”. Apparently impressed by the activities of his men, Chairman of the Agency, Ahamdu Giade said Nigeria is winning the drug war against all odds. “We are winning the anti-narcotic crusade against all odds. Drug cartels only abandon their drugs when the operating environment is inclement. This is a sign of effective security checks which is good for the country. We shall continue to intercept drugs through advance surveillance techniques”, he reiterated.
