Following an information that armed robbers were in the town , all commercial banks in Akure, the Ondo State capital Thursday stopped operations and closed at 11am so as not to be attacked by the bandits.
It was gathered that the officials of one of the new generation banks in the town got the information that the robbers were planning to attack the bank, so he quickly alerted other banks and the police for adequate security measure against the planned attack.
To this end, many customers of the backs were disappointed as they could not transact any business, having met their banks under lock and key while those already inside the banks when the information came were turned back .
In a quick response to the situation, the team of security operatives comprising the soldiers and policemen were seen patrolling the Oyemekun, Oba Adesida and Arakale roads in the capital city, where the banks were located and also the Armoured Personnel Carrier vehicles were also stationed at some strategic locations in the town .
A bank official who spoke with WESTERN POST on condition of anonymity stated that she was at the counter when her bank manager gave them the directive to stop work that robbers were around, saying everybody should close for the day and go home.
She said: “I was at the counter attending to the customers when my boss rushed into the banking hall and ordered us to stop work, he also directed the security men to shut the doors and should not allow anybody to come in.
“He told us that robbers have entered into the town, we first thought they had entered into our premises, everybody in the bank was running helter-skelter, but we later got to know that the robbers were only rumoured to be in town but not in our bank. So shortly after, we were instructed to be going home.”
In his reaction, the state Police Public Relations. Officer, Mr. Wole Ogodo, who confirmed the incident, said the state police command had been proactive about the matter as the patrol team had been sent to town.
He then declared that the police command would not relent in its fight against criminalities in the state.
