Towards the Determined to developed rural communities and discourage rural-urban drift, the Ogun State Government has distributed nine graders to communities for the commencement of the construction and rehabilitation of rural roads.
The state’s Deputy Governor, Chief Mrs Yetunde Onanuga who also oversees the activities of the Ministry of Rural Development while present the equipment at the Arcade Ground, Oke Mosan, Abeokuta said the programme would reduce the dangers faced by rural dwellers while traveling on bad roads.
The Deputy Governor according to a statement by the Press-Officer in the Ministry, Mrs. Mistura Oshileye said despite the dwindling economic fortune of the country, govt has committed enormous fund to procure the graders because of its believe in the development of the rural areas calling on the various beneficiaries to make good use of the opportunity.
“We are all aware of the fact that 80% of agricultural products in the country comes from the rural areas and hinterland and that half of these agricultural produce get damaged before getting to the markets due to a number of reason amongst which, is the lack of good road networks linking the rural areas to consumers and market in the urban”, she said.
She added that the growth of the rural communities would not only increase the supply of farm produce to the market but also element the social welfare of rural dweller and curb rural dwellers and curb rural-urban drift among youth Mrs. Onanuga therefore enjoined the beneficiaries to properly manage the equipment to enhance their sustainability, adding that community leaders should ensure they put in place monitoring schemes to enable qualitative roads that would meet “Ogun standard”.
Earlier in his welcome address, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Rural Development, Mr Wale Ogunyomade said the development of the rural areas would alleviate poverty among rural dwellers as youths would be encouraged to participate in agricultural activities in heir communities.
In his address, the Speaker State House of Assembly Rt. Hon. Suraj Adekunbi charged the chairmen to make judicious use of the equipment, adding that all local government within the constituencies to cooperate with each other toward the sustaining growth of the rural communities.
In their goodwill messages, the chairmen of Obafemi -owode Local Government Council and Ado Odo Local Council Development Area, Honorables Asalulol and segun Idowu respectively appreciated the effort of the governor by fulfilling his electoral promise to develop the rural areas of the state adding that the gesture won’t only make life easier for the people of the rural communities but always make the job of the local government chairman easier.
