Sambo Dasuki and Election Postponement

0

The recent call by Colonel Sambo Dasuki (rtd), the National Security Adviser to President Jonathan, for a postponement of the 2015 election on the ground that the Permanent Voters’ Cards have not been fully distributed has rankled not a few. The request seems to have been borne out of genuine intention, giving revelations by some prominent Nigerians, too numerous to mention, that they have not been able to collect their cards.  Nonethless, it seems too late in the day for the electiosn to be postponed now. The opposition All Progressives Congress has already kicked against the idea. Many would like to know if  Colonel Dasuki spoke the mind of President Jonathan and the ruling Peoples Democratic Party. Is that what the president and PDP are mauling at this eleventh hour of the election? Did any party sense defeat somewhere ahead of the poll?

The point is a postponement of the poll may precipitate a constitutional crisis since the timeline for the election as spelt out by the Independent National Electoral Commission is in line with the provision of the Electoral Act. Any tinkering with that timetable will create further problems. Besides, the electoral umpire has not come out to say it can’t go on with the election as spelt out on account of PVC distribution. INEC is forging ahead with the distribution and has further decentralised points at which the cards can be collected and those who have not collected should just avail themselves of those channels.
