Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Thursday advised Nigerian Institute Of Public Relations to play a lead role in the advocacy of cleaner Lagos , as they have the expertise to convey the government message to Lagosians.

Governor Sanwo-Olu gave this advice when he added Public Relation expertise at the sixth Lagos Public Relations stakeholders conference held in Lagos. In an address of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu read by the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Governor Sanwo-Olu commended the Institute for using the conference as avenue to promote meaningful dialogue and push the frontiers of participatory governance.

‘You will recollect that at the inception of our administration , I signed an executive order with clear instructions to the management of Lagos State Waste Management Authority to implement strategies that will ensure proper and efficient evacuation and disposal of waste across the state. Also, we reactivated the dormant land fill deposit sites, as well as waste transfer loading stations locations at strategic areas in the state.’

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu while addressing the Public Relations expert said the issue of environmental management is critical to the sustainability of our society, noting that the Lagos State Government have been able to consolidate on the gains of previous administrations, especially in the adoption of public-private participation of engaging waste mangers and recyclers to complement government efforts successfully.

‘The issue of maintaining a clean and healthy environment in a mega city such as Lagos, is no doubt a major challenge that requires painstaking planning and application of technology and innovative ideas. The rate at which wastes are generated today in Lagos is as a result of high and rising population, however present economic opportunities can be harnessed to promote employment and wealth creation for our people, especially young and unemployed graduates and school leavers.’

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu said his administration would continue to engage the cooperation of manufacturers in the production or usage of recyclable or bio-degradable materials in the packaging of products. He called on all stakeholders present at the conference to support strategies and programmers aimed at ensuring environmental sustainability of a smart city Lagos.
