The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ekiti State has urged Governor Ayodele Fayose to provide security for Ekiti people to allow social and economic activities thrive.
Reacting to armed robbery cases in which First Bank is always the target, the Public Secretary of the party, Taiwo Olatubosun, said the security experience of Ekiti people negated the campaign promises the governor made.
He decried the killings of security agents at Ikere bank robbery, saying the laxity in the operations of the police is not unconnected with lack of motivation and right equipment to fight crimes.
“We cried out last time that cuts by the governor in the votes to security agencies in their operations will hurt their capabilities to fight crimes.
Governor Kayode Fayemi bought armoured personnel carriers, equipment and vehicles for the police and adequately funded the Army, DSS and Nigeria Civil Defence for effective security provision.
Throughout his tenure, Ekiti people went about their normal businesses and could sleep with their eyes closed.
“It is sad that like his first term, the governor will not work with the DSS. A report of security panel set up by President Olusegun Obasanjo indicated that the governor did not like working with DSS because they would be reporting on him, preferring the police, and so we are back to the old era.
“Just a month in the saddle, we are recording reverses even when the security vote to the governor has reportedly doubled while disbursements to the security agencies have shrunk.
“We have heard how the governor reportedly asked the police headquarters in Abuja to post back to Ekiti State all the policemen he used in guarding himself and harassing his opponents during his first tenure and all of them are back to Ekiti State operating like the other time.
“Interestingly, some of these same police officers were indicted in that DSS report as being responsible for attacks on opponents. The records are there.
“We are yet to know the identities of the people in security vehicles that visited the homes of APC lawmakers at night last weekend banging on their doors,” Olatubosun said, adding that the current siege by criminals is dangerous to Ekiti people, particularly opposition politicians, who are being targeted for attacks.
He added: “In a situation where criminals operate in the same environment with a killer squad, then we can only wish our people good luck if they go out and return safely to their homes.”
“We also seize this opportunity to appeal to Ekiti State Police Command to be fair in handling of cases. For instance, in Isinbode Ekiti, we learnt that the police has succumbed to pressures from the Governor to release PDP murder suspects detained for killing an APC member before the June 21 election, while innocent APC members are daily harassed and detained by the police. One of the PDP murder suspects released has been appointed a Local Government Supervisor by Governor Fayose.
