One of the aggrieved former Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship aspirants in Oyo State, Engineer Seyi Makinde has dumped the party for the resuscitated Social Democratic Party (SDP), on which platform he hopes to contest the next gubernatorial election.
At a press conference held Monday in Ibadan, Makinde fondly called Omi Tuntun said he took the decision to leave the PDP, having failed to succeed in ensuring that free and fair election takes place in the party following disputed ward congresses.
Engr. Makinde added that he had in the first place joined the PDP with the belief that it was a party that believed in democratic tenets, but stressed that it is now clear that was not the case and as such he had not option than to call it quits.
“Based on the work that my team and I have put into the campaign to ensure change comes to Oyo State, I have decided to join the Social Democratic Party (SDP). The SDP is a party that the entire Nigerian populace is familiar with. It is the platform upon which they elected the late Basorun M.K.O. Abiola in the freest and fairest election till date on June 12, 1993,’’ he said.
Makinde promised that just as the late business mogul was symbol of hope at that time, he also represented hope for the people of the state.
Recall that following the crisis that marred the Oyo State PDP ward congresses, Engr. Makinde had boycotted the December 8 governorship primaries of the party which produced former Senate Leader, Teslim Folarin as governorship candidate of the party.
