Muslim Students Society to Host Qur’an Memorisation Competition

The Muslim Students’ Society of Nigeria (MSSN) has concluded plans to organise the grand finale of the 14th edition of the biennial Qur’an memorization competition.
This year’s event, which comes up on June 12 at the Gymnasium Hall, National Institute for Sports, National Stadium, Surulere, Lagos, is in honour of the pioneer president of MSSN and former Secretary-General of the Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, late Alhaji Lateef  Adegbite.
Speaking to a cross-section of journalists on Monday at the Bagauda Kaltho Press Centre, Alausa, Ikeja, the Amir (President) MSSN, Lagos State Area Unit, Mallam Sheed Ashafah, reiterated that the aim of the competition was to ensure that the knowledge of the Qur’an did not fade away with the numerous distractions confronting Muslim youths in the society today.
He said the project is aimed, among others, at stimulating the penchant for reading, pondering and memorizing the Qur’an among Muslim youths.
According to him, it is also aimed at engaging critical state actors on socio-economic development as enunciated by God in the Qur’an.
“MSSN LSAU has pioneered the execution of this project since 1999. We have provided the platform upon which a sizeable number of youths in the South-west have realized their potentials and are now Huffaaz, that is, memorizers of the Qur’an. We equally have produced youths who have represented the country in international competitions.
“This year’s theme is ‘The Divine Competition for Governance’ and to discuss this is the Honourable Commissioner for Home Affairs in Lagos, Dr. Abdulhakeem Abdulateef. The choice of the theme is informed by the challenging moments that our dear country is going through. You will all agree that the current situation in the country doesn’t depict the Nigeria of our dream. With the topic, we want to show Nigeria and the rest of the world that the Qu’ran remains the most reliable book for good governance. The Qur’an addresses and proffers practicable solutions to all human challenges,” he said.
Some of the dignitaries expected to grace the occasion include Deputy Governor of Lagos, Dr. Idiat Adebule; former Senator, Lagos West Senatorial District, Ganiyu Solomon; Oba of Lagos, Rilwanu Akiolu, and former Deputy Governor of Lagos, Alhaja Sinatu Ojikutu.
