The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Yakubu Dogara, on Wednesday sacked the House Committee Chairman on Appropriation, Abdulmumin Jibrin, ostensibly over the handling of the 2016 Appropriation Act.
Dogara announced Jibrin’s removal at plenary on Wednesday, saying the decision was taken by the leadership of the House. He also said that Hon. Jibrin himself later came to him after the decision had been taken that he would not want to continue as Chairman Appropriation.
Jibrin was immediately replaced by Hon. Mustapha Bala Dawaki (APC-Kano), who hitherto chaired the Committee on Housing.
But speaking with newsmen, Jibrin said he decided to step down of his own volition. He said he had done anything wrong as Chairman of the committee, saying anybody who had any evidence to show that he had abused his office or done anything wrong as Chairman, Appropriation Committee to bring it forward.
Jibrin had been enmeshed in a controversy following revelations that he allocated projects worth over N4 billion to his Kiru/Bebeji Federal Constituency of Kano State during the consideration of the 2016 Appropriation Bill.
Following the revelation, several members had demanded for his resignation, but Dogara had prevailed on them to shelve their demands.
Jibrin was one of the diehard supporters of Dogara during the election of principal officers of the House in June last year.
