Suspected Party Thugs Attack Pro-Buhari/Osinbajo Lawyers’ Rally in Akure

Thugs armed with guns, cutlasses and stones attacked the campaign rally of lawyers believed to be loyal to Buhari/ Osinbajo in Akure, the Ondo State capital on Thursday.

The lawyers under the aegis of Lawyers for Change had chose a street along Hospital Road, via the State’s High court area for the event.

But, no sooner had the lawyers converged for the street campaign than the armed thugs attacked the lawyers and dispersed the campaign procession, forcing the lawyers and journalists to scamper to safety.

Condemning the development, the Secretary of the media campaign of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Barrister Charles Titiloye indicted security agents in the state for refusing to protect the lawyers who wrote to inform them of the street campaign more than a week before the event.

According to him, the Police, Nigerian Civil Defence Corps, the Department of State Security (DSS) and the Nigerian Civil Defence Corps (FRSC) were all informed about the rally, but they refuse to turn up, giving the thugs the opportunity to attack the lawyers.

“Our democracy is under threat if lawyers cannot openly associate and express themselves or have a say during election. This is a further testimony that PDP and its agents are set for violence against the opposition in Ondo State.

Everyday as the election draw near, the ruling PDP desperation to suppress the growing opposition to its re-election increases and our security agents watch helplessly these development,” Titiloye said.

When contacted on phone, the State Chairman of Nigerian Bar Association, Barr. Dare S.K. confirmed the incident to WESTERN POST. He said though, the lawyers were attacked, but they were not Ondo State Lawyers but rather from Lagos.

All efforts to reach the security agencies as at press time proved abortive.
