Following the tragedy that struck in the
sleepy town of Ise-Ekiti, Ekiti State, where
an 18-year-old-girl Opeyemi Olowu was
shot dead by one Ifeanyi Ogudu, the
father of the deceased Chief Samuel
Olowu yesterday said he had accepted his
fate.
The deceased’s home at No 12 Oraye
Quarters, Ise-Ekiti was in pensive mood
yesterday as sympathizers were seen
consoling the family.
Life is gradually returning to the
community as some members of the
community who had taken to their heels
for fear of reprisal attack from the police
over the attack on the Divisional Police
Officer by the irate youths in respect of
the development.
Enraged youths had pounced on the DPO
as he was making efforts to rescue
Opeyemi’s assailant.
Opeyemi was shot dead last Sunday in
Ise-Ekiti by Ifeanyi with a dane gun
allegedly owned by the girl’s father.
However, irate youths in the community
apprehended the killer and set him ablaze
at the community’s roundabout.
Deceased’s Father: I Dont Know Where
He Got the Gun
In an interview with WESTERN POST,
Olowu denied knowledge of how Ifeanyi,
his tenant, got the gun he used to kill his
daughter who was said to be an SS1
student of Ise Comprehensive High School
in the town.
He added:”I don’t have a gun; I have
been a farmer after my retirement from
the Ministry of Agric. I don’t know where
he got the gun from, may be it was his
own because he used to be a security man
at a sawmill in this town but dropped the
job and decided to be operating a
commercial motorcycle.”
When pressed further, he said he had left
everything to God, adding”who do I sue to
court since my daughter has been killed
and the person that shot her had equally
been killed. I have resigned to fate. I
have collected her corpse and buried
her.”
Opeyemi’s Mum: I Was in the Bathroom
When I Heard Gun Shot
Opeyemi’s mother, Mrs. Rachael Olowu,
54, said she was in the bathroom when
she suddenly heard a gun shot.
“Before I entered the bathroom, both my
daughter and Ifeanyi were outside
interacting and playing. Suddenly I heard
a gun shot, on getting out, I saw my
daughter writhing in pain and in blood
crying. Ifeanyi was trying to rescue her
saying he did not know it would turn out
like this.”
Mrs. Olowu, however, said she could not
say why her daughter was shot dead by
Ifeanyi whom he said had been leaving
with his family under the same roof with
the Olowus.
“I don’t know what came over Ifeanyi
because we were leaving together as a
family in this house. “Ifeanyi and his
family have been leaving in this house
since three years ago and there was no
misunderstanding between my daughter
and him.”
Rachael also denied any amorous
relationship between her daughter and
Ifeanyi.
She described her daughter, the youngest
among her six children, as loving, caring,
pillar of support and very obedient to her.
Police’s Reaction
The Police Public Relations Officer in the
state, Mr. Victor Babayemi, has said those
indicted in the jungle justice meted out
to the 31-year old Ifeanyi Ogudu over the
murder of his landlord’s daughter will be
arrested and made to face the full weight
of the law.
He said the killing of Ogudu, aka Jerry, had
impeded the capacity of the police to find
out what actually prompted him to kill the
the girl.
He said: “Though, we have not been able
to verify what actually
transpired between the two, but
unconfirmed report revealed that the duo
were having amorous relationship, which
had got strained. So, we suspect that
must have caused the problem”.
