Officials of Edo State Command of the Nigeria Prisons Service on Monday deployed their men to Benin City and its environs in search of an early morning sudden escape of one of the inmates from the command’s headquarters in Benin, the state capital.
The inmate whose identity has been kept secret by the command had taken to his heels and raced along the Government Reservation Road (GRA) along the Government House-Golf Course Road shortly as he and others commenced the day’s menial job close to the Benin Moat, which shares a common boundary with the prison complex.
The incident happened as majority of the officers were yet to resume work.
Both senior and junior warders on duty quickly embarked on an intensive search for the fleeing inmate within the nearby bushes, the secretariat complex of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), the High Court and adjoining locations.
Also, another team with a white coaster bus trailed him within the GRA, abandoned buildings known to be hideouts for criminal elements, popular brothels and other possible hidden corners.
The inmate zoomed off half-naked as he pulled off his prison service uniform possibly to disguise himself as a mad man even as most passers-by who witnessed the drama cleared off the road with the thought that he was insane as he raced with an overturned knicker amid profuse sweats all over him.
Other officers were seen pulling off their uniforms to join the search team on getting the alert about the ugly situation.
The Public Relations Officer of the prison service in the state, Mr. Aminu Suleiman, confirmed the escape of the inmate but said he had no details about what actually happened.
He said: “I will speak with you on this after getting information on it upon my return to the office”.
