Palpable tension may have gripped Kogi State House of Assembly, following a sinister move by some disgruntled legislators to impeach the speaker, Rt Hon. Matthew Kolawole, over what they described as self-serving and lackadaisical attitudes toward the welfare of members.
The state legislators who stage a walk out protest to press home their demand the non payment of their constituency allowance and allowances, running into arrears.
The Speaker was was accused of only interested in his personal gains against the collective benefit of the entire members of the state Assembly.
Sources hinted that the members were angered over the sycophantic role of the Speaker when representing them before the executive arms.
It was gathered that other issues that was said to have disappointed the members was that the Speaker took the advantage of the members strike action as a bargaining chips, which eventually earned him the position of acting governor of the state, following the absence of the Governor Yahaya Bello who followed the President to Poland.
A lawmaker representing one of the constituency in the Eastern part of the state, revealed that the Speaker, had on many occasions turned himself to the executive stooge, for his personal gains.
According to a lawmaker who did not want his name in print told Journalists, 18 members of the Assembly have been meeting to ensure the removal of the speaker, and return back the integrity of the House which was long lost caused by the bad leadership of Speaker Kolawole.
“We have been going through a lot is it our allowances that have not been paid, or is it the constituency allowance that the executive refused release to us. The speaker who suppose to serve as mediator between us and the governor and also ensure that our entitlements are paid to us, he would rather go to the governor and make case for himself and jettison our collective needs.”
