Profile in Service
He has been in active politics for barely 15 years but his achievements within that period have dwarfed that seemingly short span. Indeed, those achievements are a source of envy to many a politician in the state and beyond. When Rt. Hon. Razak Atunwa Esq. steps down as Speaker of Kwara State House of Assembly by the end of this month, he would be stepping into a higher pedestal as an Honourable member of the House of Representatives. He was elected to represent his people- Ilorin West/Asa Federal Constituency- in the House during the March 28, 2015 National Assembly election.
Hon. Atunwa entered active politics effectively in 2000 upon his return from the United Kingdom after a successful legal career in that country. And since his entry into politics, he has held many portfolios as Commissioner in Kwara State. For instance, he has been Commissioner for Lands and Housing (August 2005 to August 2006), Commissioner for Information and Home Affairs (August 2006 to March 2007), Commissioner for Works and Transport (July 2007 to December 2009) and Commissioner for Finance (November 2009 to December 2010).
In 2011, he was elected into the Kwara State House of Assembly to represent Owode/Onire Constituency of Kwara State on Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) platform and was later unanimously elected Speaker of the Assembly on June 6, 2011 during the inauguration of the 7th Legislature. He has led the 7th Legislature in the state meritoriously according many members of the House, and as exemplified in the peace that has reigned in the chamber in the last four years. Atunwa’s job appears to have been done in the House, no wonder he is moving to a higher pedestal.
Hon. Atunwa was born on October 17, 1969. He hails from Efue/Berikodo Ward of Asa Local Government Area of Kwara State. He completed his primary and secondary school education in Nigeria between 1974 and 1985. He later headed for the United Kingdom for his Advanced Levels (‘A’ Levels).
