Students of Osun State University, (UNIOSUN), Osogbo campus on Thursday staged a protest over the alleged arrest of 35 students of the institution at their hostels by officials of Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC).
The angry students who prevented vehicular movement for over an hour blocked the Osogbo/Ibokun road to express their dissatisfaction over the incessant arrest of their colleagues by the EFCC, SARS and DSS officials.
Although the reason for the arrest was not yet known but it was gathered that the arrest was not unconnected to alleged financial crimes through internet fraud by the students.
It was gathered that the armed EFCC security operatives, who came from Ibadan, stormed the students hostels, which is outside the school premises around 7:00am and arrested about 35 students.
The arrested students were said to have been whisked away to EFCC office in Ibadan.
Efforts by the policemen and men of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps,(NSCDC) who were at the scene of the protest to prevent break down of law and order proved abortive.
The Policemen however shot teargas and dispersed the protesting students.
Mr Adedayo Adeyemi, the institution’s Public Relations Officer confirmed the arrest and the protest saying that management would find out the cause of the arrest by the EFCC.
He said the school management appealed to students to be peaceful pending the outcome of their investigation.
Also speaking, DSP Folashade Odoro, the Osun Police Command Public Relation Officer, said police officers had been sent to the area to protect the students.
She however, said the command did not know anything about the arrest of the students.
” We don’t know anything about the arrest. Our men were only sent there to protect the students”, Odoro said.
