UNIOSUN to Graduate 1814 Students as 49 Graduate With First Class

The Vice Chancellor, Osun State University (UNIOSUN), Prof. Labode Poopola, the Vice-Chancellor on Thursday said the institution was set to graduate one thousand eight hundred and fourteen (1,814) students for the 8th convocation.

Besides, Vice President Yemi  Osinbajo would deliver the convocation lecture entitled ” “Six Decades of  Chequred Nationhood: Nigeria still holds the key to Africa’s development”.

Popoola disclosed this at a press conference heralding the 8th convocation ceremonies of the university.

He explained that 49 students bagged first class degrees across the colleges of the institution which represent 2.7% of the total number of graduands.

The Vice-Chancellor said 670 students would be awarded with first class upper,  while 892 made second class lower.

He added that 194 made third class,  while nine students would be awarded with pass degree.

He said with the number of students that would be awarded with the various degrees during the institution’s convocation will bring to a total of nine thousand nine hundred and fifty five (9,955)students since its first convocation in 2011.

Popoola stated that the institution has been doing its best to provide world class training to its students.

The vice chancellor said henceforth the convocation ceremony would be held on September 21 the day the school was founded.

On the successes recorded by the institution, the VC said the newly established  Global Affairs and Sustainable Development institute(GASDI), by the university  institution had became center of excellence in postgraduating teaching, research and societal development in all areas of sustainable development.

“We have continued to build capacity of our staff through local and international training.

“In the course of the session,  about 150 members of staff were funded to attend conferences,  workshops and courses  and this brings to the total number of about 300 in two years.

“On our part as management,  we commit ourselves to prudent management of the university’s resources,  while doing our best to provide world-class training to our students”, Popoola said.

The Vice Chancellor also said that the institution has introduced the ” Matriculation Tree Planting Scheme” for old students where every matriculated student in a session plant a tree to commemorate the commencement of their studentship in the university.

Outlining programmes of the event, the VC said on Friday , 20 September , foundation lecture titled, “Breaking the cycle of Indolence and Dependency-a Challenge to  the Nigerian youths . He said the lecture would be delivered by Prof Abel Olajide Olorunnisola

“Thursday, 19 September , Candido Da Rocha Annual Memorial Lecture by Prof Rafiu Oyesola Salawu. Wednesday, 18 , exhibition of Research and Entrepreneurship products and Convocation play titled : Women of Owu by Femi Osofian to be performed by Uniosun cultural  troupe.

“Tuesday, 17 September, Commissioning of projects and exhibition of research and Entrepreneurship products at the site of the project/centre for Entrepreneurship hall, main campus ,Osogbo.

“Monday, 16 September, Community service (Health Talk and Free Medical services at the palace of the respective host communities of Uniosun campuses.

“Sunday, 15 September : Thanksgiving service at the Apostolic Church, Osogbo Area Headquarters, along new ring road. Friday, 13 September Jumat Service at Uniosun main campus mosque, by 1.00pm”

Four eminent Nigerians would also be conferred with honorary degrees.

They include; Dr Bola Babalakin,  the Chairman Governing Council,  University of Lagos, Jim Ovie , the Zenith Bank, Nike Okundayo… and the immediate past governor of Osun Rauf Aregbesola.
