By Olamilekan Oke

The Senate of the University of Ibadan on Wednesday approved ‎the appointment of Professor Idowu Olayinka as the new Vice Chancellor of the institution. Olayinka, 57, is to assume office on December 31.

The former head of Department of Geology is the first product of the Faculty of Social Sciences to emerge as Vice Chancellor since the institution was established in 1958.
The Pro-Chancellor of the institution and the Chairman of Council, Dr. Umar Musa Mustapha, made this announcement at a press conference held at the Senate Building, University Ibadan to unveil the new Vice Chancellor of the institution.
Mustapha urged the federal government to grant more funds to aid teaching, research and learning in the institution.

He noted that out of the 13 candidates that jostled for the post, only 6 professors were short-listed and the new VC emerged as the candidate.

In his words: “Olayinka would use the next two months for learning processes from his predecessor and the outgoing VC, Professor Isaac Adewole. ‎The screening committee short-listed three among the 13 professors that were interested in the job but the new VC made it at the interview conducted for them.”
The outgoing VC earlier in his address urged other institutions to emulate UI in what he called “transparent” in picking it’s leadership.

He pledged to extend his hand of fellowship to the new VC as he urged staff and students of the institution to extend the support he received during his tenure to the new VC.

The new VC in his first remarks pledged to improve on the legacies on ground and reposition the institution to be a globally relevant institution of learning.
