Ancient Iwo town in Osun State was thrown into another turmoil on Tuesday as unknown gunmen successfully robbed a first generation bank in the area. They carted away large sums of money in the process.
Sources, however, said apart from First Bank, other banks like Sterling and Skye were also successfully robbed. All the three banks are located opposite and around Bowen University in Iwo, which meant that the university students and staff were also thrown into commotion over the robbery.
Sources said four policemen were killed in all in the operation. But one of the robbers also allegedly lost his life.
It was learnt that the robbers had divided themselves into two, with one set heading for the Police Station in Adeke, Iwo in a bid to stop the police from moving to the scene of the robbery. At the station, the robbers engaged the police and allegedly killed an inspector.
They also demobilised the armoured tank located around the banks, killing the driver of the armoured tank in the process.
While the operation lasted, Oke-Odo in the heart of the town was like a theatre of war as gunshots boomed endlessly.
Students of the Bowen University who were caught in the wake of the operation and those who heard of the successful operation had their hearts in their mouths while the operation lasted.
The robbers were said to have stormed the area in their large number and in a coordinated manner.
After they left in their wake tale of woes as the banks and shops around them began to count their losses.
But by 6 pm on that day, calm had begun to return to the area and Bowen university.
