Update: Lagos NURTW Shifts Leadership Battle to House of Assembly

By Okunade Adekunle, Lagos

Some members of the National Union Of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Lagos State Chapter, on Wednesday stormed the entrance of the Lagos State House of Assembly, to protest against the emergence of the immediate past state council Treasurer of the Union, Alhaji Musiliu Akinsanya, as the Chairman Caretaker Committee.

The protesters carried placards with inscriptions like, “We say Yes to Union Constitution we want Govt to save our soul in Lagos, we say no to Lagos NURTW We say No to Imposition, and We Say No Self imposition as NURTW Lagos State Chairman.

“We want an end to Mc Oluomo’s continuous killings in Lagos State, We don’t want killer as our leader-MC Oluomo, We say No to thuggery in Lagos NURTW, and Government should save us from serial MC OluOmo”.

It would be recalled that the National President of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Alhaji Tajudeen Ibikunle Baruwa appointed Alhaji Musillu Akinsanya a.k.a. MC Oluomo, as the Caretaker Chairman, Lagos State chapter of the union.

It was gathered that Baruwa issued a statement on Tuesday dissolving the executive committee of the state chapter hitherto headed by Comrade Tajudeen Agbede who is now Baruwa’s deputy, and replaced it with a 18- man caretaker committee led by MC Oluomo.

Speaking with newsmen, one of the leaders of the protest, Chairman of Ojuwoye NURTW Branch A, Mr Ademola Olanrewaju, noted that his emergence would bring chaos to the state.

“A meeting was held yesterday and after the conclusion of the meeting, it was reached that MC Oluomo should be appointed the Chairman of the Caretaker Committee. Directly or indirectly, they are trying to impose him on us because there was fracas in Abuja and both parties were supposed to be dealt with but only MC’s Group was exonerated”, said Olanrewaju.

“What we are agitating for is that we don’t want MC’s government in Lagos State. We don’t want to die young. Lagos State has been able to give us the little they can in terms of empowerment by giving us what to eat and we don’t want MC to kill us”, said Olanrewaju.

Olanrewaju pointed out that the protesters have no candidate but anyone who could take on the development pace that the immediate past State Chairman started.

It will be important to point that the two major contenders are Alhaji Olawale Odugunle aka Ajilo; and immediate past NURTW state council treasurer, Musiliu Akinsanya aka MC Oluomo.
