The Chairman, Oyo State Chapter of Association of Local Government of Nigeria (ALGON), on the platform of All Progressive Congress (APC), Prince Ayodeji Aleshinloye has said that the association will continue to reject the serial illegalities committed by the state governor, Engr Seyi Makinde as far as the issue of Local Government Administration is concerned.
Prince Aleshinloye made the point in his speech delivered during the ALGON new year get together party aimed at reviewing activities of the association in 2019, held at the ALGON office in Ibadan on Thursday.
According to him, the illegalities of the government started shortly after the inauguration of Engr Makinde as the governor on May 29 announced through his yet to be sworn in Chief of Staff then, Chief Bisi Ilaka the dissolution of the democratically elected Local Government Councils and Local Council Development Area, (LCDAs).
He recalled that they came into office through elections which were conducted during the administration of Senator Abiola Ajimobi.
He said, “By Chief Bisi Ilaka illegal declaration, we were directed to hand over to our respective Head of Local Government Administration or the most senior director in our local government council, the order which we will never comply with because it was illegal unconstitutional.
“We considered the steps taken by the governor as illegal, undemocratic and a violation of rule of law and also a subsisting court injunction against the purported sack.
“In his defence, the state government said the Local Government Election that was conducted by the last dispensation was illegal because it contravened court order. Meanwhile, the government of Engr. Makinde has been asked since then to produce and give evidence of the so-called “Court Order” they repeatedly claimed restrained the conduct of local government election organized during the tenure of Senator Abiola Ajimobi.
“I will like to tell you today as ever before that the continuous disregards of the Supreme Court Judgement and High Court Judgement that forbid dissolution of democratically elected Local Government functionaries by the governor shows clearly flagrant disobedience and abuse of Rule of Law by the government led by Engr Makinde.
Prince Aleshinloye said further that: “With all our hues and cries Governor Makinde went ahead to inaugurate caretaker chairmen for the councils, not even minding the petition written to President Muhammadu Buhari, the leadership of the National Assembly and well-meaning Nigerians both by ALGON and Oyo State Chapter of the APC.
Prince Aleshinloye said up till now, governor Makinde and his government have continued to act illegally and contrary to democratic norms despite directives from the Attorney General of the Federation to the Attorney General of all the 36 states including Oyo State to comply with the decision of the Supreme Court outlawing illegal dissolution of local councils which set aside caretaker appointment over council.
The ALGON boss who lauded and support the establishment of Amotekun security outfit described the development as a fundamental objective and duty of government at all levels because without security there cannot be governance or development.
Speaking at the programme, the state chairman of the party, Chief Akin Oke assured the ALGON and party members of APC victory on the local government matter, just as he urged them to be peaceful and be law-abiding.
He said all the laudable projects executed by the Seyi Makinde administration were the noble ideas of the Senator Abiola Ajimobi’s administration.
