In the build-up to the just-ended Lagos State governorship primaries of the All Progressives Congress, Governor Babatunde Raji Fashola caused quite a stir. He openly opposed Akinwumi Ambode, the candidate of the former governor of the state and APC National Leader Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, his benefactor. He moved against Tinubu and Ambode, insisting on his own candidate, former Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice who served in his first term, Supo Shasore, saying that’s the man who could continue with his legacies. It was something some saw as an infradig for Fashola to openly oppose Tinubu’s candidate, but the governor is also entitled to his choice, others would say. No doubt Fashola has done creditably well as Lagos governor and there is the need to continue with his laudable achievements. The question is who will carry on with the job? Tinubu insisted on Ambode, an accountant. Fashola insisted on Shasore, a legal luminary. Ambode had distingusihed himself when he served as Accountant-General of the state. He served for more years under Fashola than under Tinubu and when he retired, Fashola gave him a testimonial for good performance. Shasore too did well as Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice in the state. Some said he was pulled out of the cabinet in Fashola’s first term to prepare grounds for his governorship ambition. He was soon saddled with handling the Lagos Homes’ project of the Fashola government. So the battleline was drawn in the sand between Fashola’s and Tinubu’s candidates. Fashola was fingered behind the massive publicity stunts Shasore did with rap around adverts in at least five newspapers and strident jingles on television. For the first time, APC had to settle for an open primaries. The culture of imposition associated with the party and its national leader Tinubu gave way. In the end, Ambode trounced 12 or so other candidates. On the results chart, Shasore and his votes were hardly noticeable. After the primaries, the big question now is-what’s the next gameplan of Fashola and his candidate Shasore? Is Shasore really heading for Labour Party?
