Nine highway sweepers with the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), who were victims of work place accidents in the last few weeks, have been presented with cheques in various sums of money, as part of their health insurance benefits and compensation.
In a brief commendation and appreciation ceremony which took place on Tuesday,, at its Ijora Olopa office, MD/CEO of LAWMA, Mr. Ibrahim Odumboni, said the women were commended and applauded for their dedication to work.
Describing the sweepers as heros, the MD said he will continue to prioritise the safety and wellbeing of all staff of LAWMA and ensure that they get all the necessary support and care.
However, he encouraged the sweepers to always use safety cones and sharpened iron guards as protective tools, while working to avoid accidents.
He advised them to be more vigilant while on duty, and to avoid backing the flow of traffic, assuring that the agency would never abandon them to a cruel fate.
He promised to prosecute any reckless road user, involved in inflicting bodily injuries on any LAWMA personnel.
“These sweepers are our cherished heroes, they toil day and night to make Lagos clean, and we cannot toy with their lives.
“We have consistently appealed to motorists, to exercise caution while approaching them on duty. LAWMA will explore all legal means to bring any erring motorists to justice,” Odumboni said.
