You may not know him so well. He came into limelight through Ondo State Governor Olusegun Mimiko who first appointed him Special Assistant on Inter-governmental Affairs and later Commissioner for Education. And also through Mimiko’s high contact and closeness to former President Goodluck Jonathan, Osunyinkanmi bagged the big job of Director-General of the Technical Aids Corp (TAC) in Abuja. It’s incontrovertible that Dr. Pius Osunyinkanmi is a brilliant technocrat and one who can hold his own anywhere, but he is a political rookie any day. And he has demonstrated this with the way and manner he is playing his politics. When he was getting all the big jobs, he was a big protégé of Governor Mimiko whether in Labour Party or Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Then, the Ondo governor could do no wrong. But as is the way of many of our politicians, as the countdown to the 2016 governorship poll in Ondo began, Osunyinkanmi switched camps. He moved over to the governing All Progressives Congress (APC) and began calling Mimiko and some other leaders like Barrister Eyitayo Jegede (SAN) all kinds of names. He said Mimiko’s 7 years on the saddle was a waste. Then he was enjoying himself, having a field day. Now, the chickens have come home to roost. A political group in the state, Akure Division Agenda, is calling for his head for his ‘unguarded comments’ during his formal declaration for the opposition party in the state.
This was contained in a statement made available to newsmen in Akure on Monday by the group’s chairman, Engineer Yemi Oluwadare, and Secretary, Jayeoba Olawale, alleging that he maligned the collective will of the Akure speaking communities. The group particularly stated that the sharp comments made by Osunyinkanmi, whom it said described the possibility of an Akure indigene being sponsored by the the incumbent governor to succeed him next year, is an insult on the people. According to the group, “Dr. Pius Osunyinkanmi has crossed all limits during his speech on February 11, 2016 when he officially decamped to APC where he also referred to Barr. Eyitayo Jegede (SAN) as a fool and Mimiko stooge. “We are not going to turn blind eye to insults hurled at any of our sons and daughters irrespective of their political affiliation,” the group said.
